Creating Inviting Spaces for Reading in the Home

As parents, we all hope a seed gets planted and nurtured in our children that will instill a love for reading and help our children grow into life-long readers. Images of children cozied up on the couch under a warm blanket with an engaging book certainly fill our minds. But often the question is, how do I encourage this for my children in my home? Here are a few simple suggestions that I have found to be helpful in creating inviting spaces for reading in our home.

*Book Baskets: We like to keep books organized in book baskets in our home. We have a library book basket where all of the weekly library books are kept for safe keeping, and we always have a seasonal book basket out as well. We find these book baskets are a great way to invite our boys to pick up a book and start reading throughout the day. You can add a book basket just about anywhere in your home to help encourage your child(ren) to grab a good book and get comfy reading.

*Create a Reading Nook: We created this cozy little nook for reading in our play loft. I was always a bit unsure what to do with this interesting space in our home, so once it became a reading nook it totally came to life. This space is so inviting for our boys to grab a good book and get comfy reading. The twinkle lights and prayer flags add a bit of magic to the space as well.

Perhaps ponder a bit on where you might be able to create an inviting reading space in your home…I bet you will come up with at least one place you could add a pillow (or two), a beanbag, a fluffy rug, a lamp, or a comfy chair that would help invite your child(ren) to cozy up with a good book. Don’t forget to set a book basket nearby as well. Happy reading!!

If you are wanting to learn more about how to cultivate a nurturing home environment for your children that invites both reading and learning, both our “Gentle Beginnings to Homeschooling Grades K-5” and “Gentle Beginnings to Being Home with a Preschooler” guides provide much more detail on how to nurture this topic and many more. They can be purchased and downloaded for $25 in our online shop.  Enjoy!
